Marina Beach: A Photo Poem
With apologies to just about everyone, but especially Omar Khayyam. This might make more sense with the photos. MGR is the statue to MG Ramachandran, film actor and the most popular politician in the history of Tamil Nadu and there is a large shrine to him and also the tomb to Anna Durai, the Dravidian Movement founder leading down to the sea. 200 people were washed out to sea by the 2004 Tsunami.

“Marina Beach is long and hot
Acres of sand are what it’s got.
From Ft St George to 6 miles south
It’s Atlantic City with a smiling mouth.
The sea is rough, the waves are strong,
But still the people join the throng
Families, hawkers, fortune tellers & stalls
Escape from the teeming shopping malls.
Watch the sea, ride the waves
Christen a sari, or your babes,
Sunday is the time to stroll
And watch the people surf and roll.
Ride a horse or a fly on the fish
Only the brave will try that dish
Ice cream for crow on Anna Square
Listen to MGR there.
Two hundred people jogged away
In 2004 on Boxing Day
Like grains of sand , the Moving Finger writes
And having writ, moves on”.

Gosh – all very exciting for a day at the seaside! Am interested to know if they fish from the beach or do they take fishing boats out from the beach or form elsewhere? x
Couldn’t see any fishing boats there, so I suspect they are caught further along the coast. All looked a little bit too open for our tastes as there were a LOT of flies about x
